010526 Tell Congress: Oppose the Occupation of Venezuela
Military operations in Venezuela have already begun. Congress must act now to stop this from becoming a full-scale occupation.
Trump tipped off oil companies before launching military action. While American troops were being deployed, oil executives were getting advance notice. That tells you everything about whose interests this serves.
Trump claims he's acting against drug trafficking, but that's a transparent pretext. Venezuela isn't even a source of fentanyl—the actual drug killing Americans. And drug trafficking is a law enforcement matter, not justification for invading a sovereign nation. Under international law, military force requires either UN Security Council authorization or defense against an actual armed attack. Neither exists here.
Trump's own actions expose the lie: In November, he pardoned former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was convicted of large-scale drug trafficking. Apparently drug trafficking is only a problem when it's a pretext for regime change.
Military experts warn an occupation would require 150,000 troops and could cost tens of thousands of American lives. The urban warfare would make it deadlier than Iraq.
The time to act is now—before more troops are deployed.
