010826 Tell Congress: Restore Federal Aid to Families in Need

The Trump administration is withholding critical federal funding for childcare and family assistance in five states with Democratic governors—California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York. They claim fraud but have provided no evidence.

These programs are lifelines for struggling families. The Child Care and Development Fund subsidizes daycare so low-income parents can work. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families provides cash for basic necessities like diapers and clothes. Without these programs, working parents lose childcare and children go without essentials.

The administration is making wild claims and withholding aid without evidence. HHS claims "concerns" exist but provides no details. Trump announced "The Fraud Investigation of California has begun" without citing a single case. Dr. Mehmet Oz said he plans to audit Minnesota's Medicaid "in search of potential fraud"—admitting they haven't actually found any.

This follows a troubling pattern. For months, the administration has claimed fraud in federal programs without evidence, using these allegations to freeze funding in mostly Democratic-led states.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said it clearly: "To use the power of the government to harm the neediest Americans is immoral and indefensible."

If fraud exists, it should be investigated and prosecuted. But millions of innocent families shouldn't be punished based on vague allegations.

Congress can demand the administration provide evidence or restore funding immediately. They can protect these vital programs from political manipulation and hold hearings on this use of federal power.
