011426 Tell Congress: Stop The DOJ's Political Prosecution of Powell

On January 10, 2026, the Justice Department served grand jury subpoenas threatening criminal indictment of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. The alleged crime? His testimony about Federal Reserve building renovations.

As Powell himself explained, these charges are an astonishing attempt at retaliation: "The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the president."

Once again, Trump has weaponized the DOJ to get his way:

  • Trump has spent months attacking Powell—whom he appointed—demanding lower interest rates

  • When Powell refused, Trump threatened to fire him (illegal under the Federal Reserve Act)

  • The administration fired Fed Governor Lisa Cook on fabricated mortgage fraud allegations

  • Now the DOJ launches a criminal investigation over building testimony—approved by Trump loyalist Jeanine Pirro

  • Powell's term conveniently ends in May, and Trump has already named his replacement

The Justice Department is criminalizing policy independence. Republican Senator Thom Tillis condemned the investigation, saying it removes "any remaining doubt" that the Trump administration is "actively pushing to end the independence of the Federal Reserve."

The DOJ is threatening America's economic credibility to punish an official who refused presidential demands.

Congress must investigate this abuse of prosecutorial power and defend Federal Reserve independence.
