012726 Tell Congress: Allow A Standalone Vote On DHS/ICE Funding

This Friday at midnight, roughly half the federal government could shut down—and it's all because Republicans refuse to allow a separate vote on Department of Homeland Security funding.

Six spending bills have passed. Six remain—including the one funding DHS, CBP, and ICE. The House bundled them together and sent them to the Senate as a package deal.

But Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, are demanding two separate votes: one on DHS (including ICE), and one on the other five bills. This would allow Congress to negotiate real accountability measures and budget reforms for ICE without risking a broader shutdown.

Republicans are refusing. They'd rather shut down the government than allow ICE to face scrutiny.

Here's what's at stake:

  • Budget reforms - ICE needs oversight on how it spends taxpayer money

  • Behavioral safeguards - Congress must have the ability to attach conditions to funding

  • Government services - Millions of Americans depend on the agencies Republicans are holding hostage

Republicans will claim Democrats are "shutting down the government to abolish ICE." That's a lie. Democrats are simply asking for the chance to debate ICE funding separately—the same process Congress uses for controversial spending every year.

Democrats will say Republicans are shutting down the government to shield ICE from any accountability whatsoever. That's the truth.

In solidarity,
