020426 Tell Jeff Bezos: Stop Destroying The Washington Post
Jeff Bezos is systematically dismantling one of America's most important journalistic institutions—the Washington Post—at the exact moment when strong, independent journalism matters most.
For over a year, self-inflicted wounds have devastated this storied newspaper. Major layoffs loom that would further decimate an already gutted newsroom. Star reporters and Pulitzer Prize-winning columnists have fled to the New York Times, the Atlantic, and the Wall Street Journal. Hundreds of thousands of subscribers have canceled in disgust.
Here's the damage Bezos has inflicted since he began cozying up to Trump:
Editorial independence destroyed - Bezos spiked a Harris endorsement editorial at the 11th hour before the 2024 election, apparently to protect his commercial interests and please Trump.
Talent exodus - Some of the nation's best journalists, columnists, and editors have departed. Cartoonist Ann Telnaes resigned after her cartoon depicting Bezos kowtowing to Trump was blocked.
Financial negligence - While Bezos claims the Post loses $100 million annually, this represents a "rounding error" for someone worth $250 billion. The New York Times and Guardian US are thriving—the Post's losses aren't inevitable.
Trump appeasement - Amazon contributed to Trump's inauguration and put $40 million behind a Melania Trump documentary that's flopping in theaters.
The Washington Post broke Watergate. It revealed the Edward Snowden revelations. It has won endless Pulitzers for holding power accountable. This newspaper is foundational to American democracy.
Bezos has the resources and the power to save it. He simply needs to choose journalism over appeasement.
