021126 Tell Congress: Investigate ICE Detention Violence (30 DAY CLICKERS)
An ICE officer has been federally charged with civil rights violations after video showed him repeatedly beating a handcuffed immigrant in custody.
ICE officer Luis Orduno-Martinez was caught on video punching a handcuffed man multiple times in the head and body at an ICE facility in Otay Mesa, California. The victim was restrained and defenseless. Federal prosecutors charged Orduno-Martinez with deprivation of rights under color of law—a charge that carries up to 10 years in prison.
This assault raises urgent questions: How many other acts of violence go unreported? What supervision failures allowed this to happen? What is the culture within ICE facilities nationwide?
No person—regardless of immigration status—deserves to be beaten while in government custody. Congress has oversight responsibility for ICE and must act. We need a full investigation into ICE's use of force policies, accountability mechanisms, and how widespread these abuses are.
