021826 Tell Congress: Reject Rubio's Imperialist Worldview

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio just delivered what analysts call "one of the most revisionist and imperialist speeches" ever made by a senior American official at the Munich Security Conference.

His address received a standing ovation—even as the Trump administration violates international law by kidnapping sovereign leaders and embracing 19th-century imperialism.

What's at stake:

  • Celebration of colonialism: Rubio lamented the fall of "great Western empires" and called anti-colonial movements a mistake

  • Contempt for international law: Rubio’s speech was delivered amid the kidnapping of Venezuela's president

  • Monroe Doctrine expansion: Excludes Latin America while claiming hemispheric control

  • White supremacist undertones: Laundering supremacist ideology through "Western values" language

Geopolitical analyst Arnaud Bertrand warns Rubio is "openly saying that the whole post-colonial order was a mistake and calling on Europe to share the spoils of building a new one."

Professor Nathalie Tocci calls the speech "just as dangerous, if not more so" than JD Vance's hostile Munich address because it may "lull Europe into a false sense of calm."
