031326 Tell Congress: Protect Mifepristone Now
Sen. Josh Hawley just introduced a bill to completely strip FDA approval from mifepristone — the medication used in 63% of all abortions in the United States. If it passes, accessing this safe, approved drug could become a federal crime.
Congress must reject this dangerous legislation — and your signature demands exactly that.
Here's what's at stake and what demands your voice:
The FDA approved mifepristone in 2000 after rigorous scientific review, and subsequent reviews have not identified any new safety concerns. The FDA puts the rate of serious adverse effects at 0.5%. Hawley's claims rely on a disputed study from a conservative think tank — not the independent medical consensus.
An estimated 7.5 million women have used mifepristone to end pregnancies since it was approved. Banning it wouldn't eliminate the need — it would eliminate safe access.
Hawley's bill — the so-called "Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act" — would not only withdraw FDA approval but classify distribution of the drug as a violation of federal law, threatening doctors, pharmacists, and patients alike.
The FDA's own website states that mifepristone "went through a rigorous process before it was originally approved" and that further reviews have "not identified any new safety concerns." Congress should not override decades of independent scientific review with ideologically driven legislation.
