041426 Tell Congress: Stop Guantánamo Migrant Detention Now
The Pentagon is prepared to set up a migrant "camp" at Guantánamo Bay for Cubans fleeing a humanitarian crisis — a crisis the Trump administration itself is helping create through an embargo and fuel blockade. Eighty-five human rights organizations are sounding the alarm.
Gen. Francis Donovan, commander of US Southern Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee last month that in the event of a mass migration event from Cuba, the military would "set up a camp" at Guantánamo Bay to "deal with" migrants. This isn't a hypothetical — the Trump administration already sent roughly 780 immigrants to Guantánamo since early last year, and previously attempted to erect tent facilities there for up to 30,000 people.
Guantánamo has a documented record of inhumane conditions, mistreatment, and due process violations. Using it as a holding pen for refugees — people fleeing a crisis America is actively worsening — is both a moral and legal outrage.
Congress can act on two fronts:
Cut the funding. Legislators must ensure no additional dollars go toward expanding detention facilities at Guantánamo, for migrants or anyone else.
End the policies driving the crisis. The embargo and fuel blockade on Cuba are pushing the island toward humanitarian collapse. Congress should demand an end to the coercive sanctions that are forcing Cubans to flee in the first place.
