042326 Tell FERC: Stop Big Tech's AI Power Grab
The Trump administration is pressuring federal energy regulators to fast-track AI data centers onto the power grid — and everyday utility customers could end up footing the bill.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) faces an April 30 deadline set by Energy Secretary Chris Wright to finalize sweeping new rules that would give the federal government unprecedented control over how massive data centers connect to the grid. State regulators, grid operators, and consumer advocates are sounding the alarm, and so should you.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright directed FERC to issue a final rule by April 30, a timeline the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates called "patently unreasonable." FERC Chair Laura Swett — a Trump appointee — has said she intends to "push right up to the edge" of federal authority to get the White House's agenda done. Meanwhile, AI giants like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Meta are demanding faster grid connections for data centers that can consume as much power as entire cities.
Even a former FERC chairman appointed by Trump has called this a "massive power grab" that could shift costs to consumers and undermine grid reliability. Tell your representatives and FERC commissioners to take two clear actions: Require Big Tech to pay its full share. Any new grid rules must guarantee that AI companies — not ordinary ratepayers — cover the full cost of the grid upgrades their data centers require. Protect state authority.
FERC must not strip states of their longstanding role in regulating local electricity markets and protecting their residents from rate hikes.
