090626 Stop Trump’s Attack on Endangered Gray Wolves (AC)

Donald Trump just launched a new attack on endangered gray wolves.

A new executive order directs the Department of the Interior to review whether gray wolves and Mexican gray wolves should be stripped of federal protections under the Endangered Species Act. It also pushes federal officials to work with states on weakening state-level protections and expanding lethal takings.

Gray wolves have made important progress in some regions, but recovery is not secure everywhere. Mexican gray wolves remain especially vulnerable, and any decision that could expose them to more killing deserves the highest level of scrutiny.

The Endangered Species Act exists because vulnerable wildlife should not be sacrificed to political pressure or industry lobbying. Federal agencies are supposed to follow the best available science — not rush through decisions designed to make it easier to kill wolves.
