100125 Tell Trump: Keep National Parks Protected During Shutdown

Trump wants to keep national parks open during a shutdown—with no rangers on duty.

Last time he did this during the 2018-19 shutdown, the results were devastating:

  • Century-old Joshua trees cut down

  • Prehistoric petroglyphs vandalized

  • Illegal vehicles destroying desert ecosystems

  • Wildlife poached, trash overflowing

  • 26 pages of documented destruction

That was during the winter months. October brings 28 million visitors and wildfire season. Without staff to manage campfires or respond to emergencies, the risks are enormous.

Over 40 former park superintendents are formally requesting that the administration protect our national parks by temporarily shutting them down: "If sufficient staff aren't there, visitors shouldn't be either."

But Trump already ordered parks to stay open in April "even when resources were severely thin." Park staffing has been slashed by 25%.

Our parks deserve protection, not destruction.
