100325 Tell Trump: Work With Democrats to Fund WIC and End the Shutdown

The government shutdown hit at the worst possible time for WIC—the program that provides healthy food to 6.8 million pregnant women, new moms, and children under 5, also known as the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children

Because the shutdown started on the first day of the fiscal year, states didn't receive their quarterly funding. WIC could run out of money within a week or two.

What that means for families:

  • No money for fruits, vegetables, eggs, milk, peanut butter, yogurt

  • No infant formula for new moms

  • No breastfeeding support

  • Kids' immunity going down because families can't afford oranges and healthy food

One mom in Minnesota said: "All the food that we get from WIC goes to our kids. So you're really harming the kids" if services pause.

WIC has been "politically untouchable" until now. This is the first time it's been dragged into shutdown politics.

6.8 million moms and kids deserve better than this.

Trump needs to work with Democrats, negotiate on healthcare funding, and end this shutdown before WIC runs out of money.

In solidarity,
