100925 Tell the Supreme Court: Uphold Conversion Therapy Bans

The Supreme Court is hearing arguments that could overturn conversion therapy bans in 20+ states—putting countless trans and queer youth at risk.

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is representing a Colorado counselor challenging the state's ban. But the scholars ADF cited say the group "profoundly misrepresented" their research.

What's at stake:

  • Research shows 44-63% of youth who undergo conversion therapy attempt suicide

  • Conversion therapy is ineffective and harmful to survivors, and has been condemned by the American Medical Association and American Psychological Association

  • Children in over 20 states that have banned conversion therapy could once again be subjected to harm if ADF succeeds in ending bans

Dr. Lisa Diamond and Professor Clifford Rosky say ADF cherry-picked quotes from their work while ignoring their explicit condemnation of conversion therapy on the same page.

"This is lethally dangerous to LGBTQ+ kids," Rosky said. "They claim our work supports conversion therapy when our work clearly and specifically condemns it."

The takeaway:

LGBTQ+ youth deserve to be supported and affirmed—not subjected to discredited practices that drive them to suicide.
