102325 Tell Congress: Stop The National Park Service Cuts
The Trump administration is planning to cut over 2,000 jobs from the agencies protecting America's national parks—causing visitor center closures, longer wait times, and threats to public safety.
Court documents recently revealed the Interior Department's plan to lay off 2,050 employees across agencies overseeing public lands. The National Park Service alone faces 270 position cuts on top of the 1,000 workers already fired in February.
What's at stake:
Parks have already lost 24% of their permanent staff since January 2025—nearly a quarter of the workforce gone
Yosemite delayed summer campground reservations due to staffing concerns
Great Smoky Mountains is actively discouraging visitors due to safety concerns
Kristen Brengel of the National Parks Conservation Association says the administration is cutting jobs "without looking at what these folks do. They are just slashing the jobs."
The consequences are already being felt: closed visitor centers, unmaintained trails, longer emergency response times, and stolen artifacts due to inadequate security.
National parks generated $55.6 billion for the economy in 2023 and support 415,000 jobs in gateway communities. These cuts threaten both America's natural heritage and local economies.
